Already disappointing against Egypt, Uruguayans have delivered another poor quality performance against the Saudis. But they assured the essential: victory (1-0)and qualification for the round of 16.
Disappointing Friday against Egypt for its entry into the competition, Uruguay did not correct the shot on Wednesday against Saudi Arabia for its second match of the worlds. Celeste, however, faced the worst team of the first day, humiliated (0-5) by Russia in the opening match. Cut in half or even in three, Diego Godin’s teammates had to rely on a mistake from Mohammed Al-Owais to score. Starting instead of Al-Mayouf, the Saudi goalkeeper missed his exit on a corner shot by Carlos Sanchez : the ball passed over his hand and ended his run on Luis Suarez’s foot (23′). Hard on the Saudis.
Juan Antonio Pizzi had largely reshaped his starting eleven, making four changes (Al-Bulaihi, Bahebri and Al-Muwallad in addition to Al-Owais). Paying choices : his players showed a totally different face, their goal announced. Applied, well in place in their 4-1-4-1, they still had a higher possession of the ball (54%) than their opponents, but they used it better. The proof : they framed four strikes. Four more than against the Russians… But they were again betrayed by their lack of Physics. In the face of this problem, Pizzi can’t do much… And that’s his Saudi Arabia eliminated in the second game, dragging Egypt down. Qualified, Russia and Uruguay will face each other Monday for first place in group A.
the player : Luis Suarez, scoring for his hundredth
Catastrophic against Egypt, Luis Suarez did not perform a great performance against the green Hawks. However, the forward had a slight improvement : he had two shots (against None against the Egyptians). He especially scored the only goal of the game, becoming the first Uruguayan to score in three world Cups (2010, 2014 and 2018). He is involved in 8 of Uruguay’s last 15 goals in the World Cup (6 goals, 2 assists).
Saudis have no Guardian
Six days after the catastrophic performance of Abdullah al-Mayouf, noted 2 in our daily newspaper, Mohammed Al-Owais has regained the starting position in the goal. His Central Hawsawi – Al-Bulaihi defence was particularly strong, so he did not have much work and made only two stops. But he made a hole on a field trip, building on a Saudi tradition : the goalkeepers made four mistakes leading to a World Cup goal since 1994. No country has done more.
